As a native Kentuckian, I want to point out that not everyone from that area of the country -- roughly the Bluegrass State and points directly south -- is a seething, closet racist. It's not perfect there, but it's changed a lot over the years, and it will continue to do so.
But that rot stubbornly remains in some places. From today's Washington Post story on the increasing popularity of Michelle Obama:
Okay, we all know that when someone says up front that what they're about to say has nothing to with color or race, there's a pretty good chance that they're about to say something that's brimming with racial overtones. But the big tip off, and a phrase that I've heard many times in many similar forms, is the complaint about a "big attitude." It's what a certain kind person starts saying after they figure out they can't say "uppity" anymore.
While this particular quote comes from Tennessee, it could easily have come from Kentucky -- I sometimes think the only real difference between the states is that Tennessee has Dolly Parton while we have Loretta Lynn. But it's a reminder that regardless how much some people learn to code their language to cloak their intentions, some people are never going to change.
