Cavin began building a new garden in front of the house last summer, centering on the remaining stump from the dying tree we had cut down for safety reasons. He installed a fountain that he created pretty much from scratch -- along with a Feng Shui manual -- and planted a lot of bulbs for the coming spring.
Last week I looked out the window and saw a small green Buddha sitting serenely on the tree stump amid the buttercups and tulips. I figured Cavin had added him in and that some complex religious computation had determined that the statue would face due west. But when I asked him about it, he didn't know where the Buddha had come from. No one in the house has claimed credit and neither has his aunt. Barring any admissions from neighbors, I'm simply considering him our own Magical Mystery Buddha, the miracle of Falls Church. He seems peaceful, doesn't he?
