Remember when John McCain decided to pin the chances of his presidential campaign on a political stunt and "suspended" his campaign in order to focus exclusively on the breaking financial crisis? And remember when Barack Obama slyly mocked the Arizona senator by pointing out that presidents need to be able to do more than one thing at a time? It was funny, as they say, 'cause it's true.
So now Obama has the entire federal civilian and military bureaucracy at his command, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in out on Fox telling the nation that repealing the odious "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy -- a repeal that enjoys support from 75 percent of Americans -- that "let's push that one down the road a little bit" because they have "a lot on our plates right now."
Really? That's what we're going to have to hear for the next few months on an issue that speaks directly to military necessity in a time of war -- a war that's going to be expanding once more in Afghanistan?
I think that plate's asking us to eat quite a lot of something.
